If you suffer from TMD, the good news there is hope! Here at William G. Kaylakie DMD in Austin, Texas, we offer treatment options for TMD and are happy to provide you with answers about TMD and how you can treat this painful condition.

Many people are left wondering what is TMD? That is why, our team is happy to tell you that temporomandibular joints, or TMJs, are the two joints on the side of your jaw that open and close your mouth. When they hurt or feel sore, simple tasks of talking, chewing, and even swallowing can be extremely difficult. Your TMJ also works together with other muscles and ligaments in your jaw bone to keep the motion in your jaw fluid. When these joints or muscles become inflamed, strained, or damaged, intense pain in your joints or headaches can occur.

Did you know, there are many possible causes of TMD, also known as TMJ disorders? Some of these include:

-Injury to your jaw or joint pain
-Arthritis
-Bad tooth or jaw alignment
-Dislocation of your jaw
-Severe stress and teeth grinding putting pressure on the joints in your jaw

Whatever may have triggered your TMJ disorder, the important thing is to get properly diagnosed, so you can begin treatment. There are also other things you can do on your own to improve your TMJs. These include:

– Avoid chewing gum.
– Exercise to strengthen your jaw muscles.
– Avoid nail biting.
– Eat softer foods.
– Use heat packs to treat the pain.
