Canker sores are white or gray sores in the mouth that are quite painful and irritating. If you have canker sores, you’re likely searching for a way to treat and eliminate them. While you can’t treat them, canker sores usually resolve themselves within a week or two. Until then, you can relieve the pain and discomfort you experience. Our dentist, Dr. William G. Kaylakie, is happy to help you do so by encouraging you to do the following things:

-Use over-the-counter topical products that numb the sore and the surrounding area

-Use an antimicrobial mouthwash (This product kills bacteria in the sore)

-Stay away from hot, spicy or acidic foods and drinks (These foods and drinks tend to irritate the sore)

-Ask your dentist about antibiotics that can help

-Use oral bandages to reduce chances of secondary infection

The most common culprits of canker sores include immune system problems, bacteria or viruses. Sometimes the sores also form when there is trauma to the tissue, such as when you, bite your cheek or your orthodontic appliance irritates your mouth. The sore isn’t contagious and it isn’t something to worry too much about.
